Patients often dismiss a chronic sore throat or recurring hoarseness as allergies or the flu. However, a chronic hoarse voice could be indicative of an underlying problem with the vocal folds (vocal cords).
Vocal nodules are callous-like growths, usually appearing on the edges of the vocal folds and cause a hoarse vocal quality. Initially, these nodules are small, soft, and easily changed with appropriate voice therapy. As the nodules remain on the vocal folds longer without treatment, they become larger, hard, and difficult to change without surgery.
An Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor (ENT) diagnoses vocal nodules through visual inspection of the vocal folds.
Speech Therapists are trained to provide therapy that can be effective at reducing or eliminating vocal nodules
